Event Description
Get Started Walking the Wainwrights is a two-day course specifically for people wanting to complete the Wainwrights but not sure how to get started. After the course you will have a solid understanding of hillwalking skills so you can enjoy your Wainwrights journey with confidence.
Summiting all 214 Wainwrights in the Lake District is a popular peak bagging challenge and a great way to discover the Lake District National Park. Ranging in height from 290 to 978 metres, the Wainwrights take you on a journey to all types of mountainous landscapes, with each summit having its own set of challenges and unique character.
This two-day course will help you get started on your Wainwrights journey so you can get out in the fells and start ticking off the summits with confidence. We cover all the essential skills such as navigation, planning, mountain safety and lots of tips and advice. Each day you will also complete a walk ticking off several summits while learning on the way.
Skills covered in the course:
- About the Wainwrights and geography of the Lakes
- Guidebooks – classic and new
- Introduction to mountain navigation and map reading
- Route planning and strategies
- Access and conservation
- Staying safe in the mountains and dealing with emergencies
- Understanding mountain weather forecasts
- Clothing and equipment
- Lots of tips and knowledge from our experienced leaders
Each day will be a relaxed and enjoyable day completing a multi-summit walk summiting several Wainwrights over the two days. There will be lots of chat during the walks covering all the essential hillwalking skills you need to get started safely and with confidence.
Dates and Times
Courses start at 9am and finish around 5.00pm each day.
- No dates for 2022
Prerequisites and Fitness
Although this is a ‘beginners’ course, you still need a good level of hillwalking fitness to complete the two days. We suggest training if you need to and getting out on some bigger hills and longer walks so you are ready for a couple of days in the mountains.
Course location
The course starts in Grasmere on day one. We may decide to travel to a different area on day two depending on the group and aspirations. We will try and keep as local to Grasmere as we can but expect a 15-20 min drive on day two.
