Event Description
St Sunday Crag, Birks and Arnison Crag make up a long ridge line walk to Fairfield which dominates the skyline above Ullswater. A dramatic, beautiful and varied route that showcases some of the very best views in the Eastern Fells.
St Sunday Crag is a dominant ridge line towering over Ullswater and the Grisedale Valley. From Patterdale the route is via the quieter summits of Arnison Crag and Birks before heading along the airy ridge of the rocky north-west face to the summit of St Sunday Crag. From the summit the views over Helvellyn, Striding Edge, and down to Deepdale are stunning. Continuing along the ridge the route heads to a steep and rocky climb up to Cofa Pike and on to Fairfield. A steep descent down to Grisedale Tarn before a long walk back through the beautiful Grisedale Valley to Patterdale.
The 4 Wainwright summits are:
- Arnison Crag – 433m
- Birks – 622m
- St Sunday Crag – 841m
- Fairfield – 873m

What is the walk of the year?
Every year we will be leading a special ‘one-off’ walk that explores a different part of the Lake District. The walk will be different each year so there is always going to be something new to look forward to. The routes will be some of our favourites, often the less travelled and more obscure areas, and a way for you to tick off even more Lakeland summits and discover new places.
Where does it start?
The walk starts and finishes in Patterdale, which is south of Ullswater and a mile from Glenridding.
Is it for me?
The walk requires a good level of fitness and you will need to be able to walk for up to 7-hours over wild and challenging terrain and tackle almost 1000m of ascent. We highly recommend training for this walk and ensuring you are prepared for a long multi-peak day in the mountains.
