Getting started is often the hardest thing which is why we have designed this workshop specifically around your needs.

Let us help you get started and teach you the fundamentals needed to safely enjoy the mountains.

Workshop overview

This 2-day workshop is aimed at people who are new to hillwalking and want to learn the skills so they can safely and competently walk in the mountains.

Both days will be theory and practice based and aimed at giving you the core knowledge and skills required to become a confident hillwalker. The workshop is relaxed and ran at a comfortable pace so you won’t be overwhelmed or put under pressure.

Avoid the pitfalls and learn valuable skills that will ensure your walks are fun, safe and enjoyable on this practical, skills based workshop.

  • Map reading and mountain navigation
  • Planning and selecting routes
  • Walking skills and strategy
  • Kit, equipment and clothing
  • Reading and understanding mountain weather forecasts
  • Conservation and the environment

  • And of course…lots of fun

The workshops will be held in the Langdale Valley, Lake District. The Langdale Valley is 5-miles from Ambleside.

Workshop instructors

Your instructors are not only fully qualified mountain leaders but also experts in teaching skills, coaching and development. They will be with you for the entire workshop and offer lots of 1-to-1 advice, practical help and expert coaching.

Your instructors have trained hundreds of hillwalkers and are experts at delivering outstanding courses and workshops. They are also some of the nicest people you will ever meet.

What you will need

  • A passion and interest for hillwalking
  • Desire to learn hillwalking skills
  • Suitable outdoor clothing and equipment (kit list will be sent)
  • A good level of fitness
  • Hillwalking experience is not essential (suitable for complete beginners)
  • You can come alone or with friends


How the workshop works

The workshop involves two practical days out in the mountains. These days will be both theory and practice based and are aimed at giving you a solid grounding in the skills and theories of hillwalking as well as practical expertise.

Both days are packed with hands-on activities and demonstrations that are designed to focus on a number of essential skills. There will be plenty of discussions which will further improve your knowledge and confidence.

When you have finished

After completing this workshop, you will be able to plan your own walks in the mountains. You will know how to prepare for your walk and have the confidence to navigate yourself and deal with any issues.
